Academic Research on Children and Media
The National Council for Children’s Television (NCCT) is a national government agency that promotes media education and the production of quality television programs that develop the overall well-being of the Filipino child, to wit:
“The State recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation-building and shall promote and protect their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual and social well-being by enhancing their over-all development, taking into account sectoral needs and conditions in the development of educational, cultural and recreational policies and programs addressed to them.”1
As a policymaking body, NCCT is working towards building rapport with the broadcast media and the civil society groups, let alone, different sectors (e.g. children, parents, teachers) as end-stakeholders, for forthcoming policies and programs related to children and television.
As per Section 7 of RA 8370, one of the key functions of NCCT is “to initiate the conduct of research for policy formation and program development and disseminate its results to broadcasters, advertisers, parents, and educators on issues related to television and Filipino children”.
NCCT recognizes itself as a learner-centered public institution, by ensuring that its policies, programs, and activities formulated are based from sound evidence. In order to achieve this, comprehensive and relevant data through the conduct of research should be established and presented. Research findings contribute greatly to policy studies and to ensuring that the programs of the agency are relevant and are adaptive to the generation’s current trends.
